Dear Gordon NZ at thelearningweb.net 7 Apr 2012 at 09:45

I am just back from bangaldsh where the japanese ambassador hosted a remembrance party to father with chief guest sir fazle abed

I am preperaed to take a strong position that not one knowledge network economy global sector (eg health banking education energy sports/music newtech old-media agriculture water ...) exists of the post-industrial revolution kind dad or drucker argued for. Unlike the industrial age, multi-win models leveraging million times mkore colaboration capability of tech than when man raced to moon define whether a market is post-industrial. Unless we start designing such sectors openly, macreoconomics will put more and more youth out of work in usa and europe, and fail to joyfully end poverty with internet age collaboration networks in developing countries

I very much want the world's first global sector to truly represnet taht revolution to be education from K to 18 if that includes primary secondary tertiary and business schools. I have tried to tell japan that its country is the biggest economy that can cheer that on everywhere educators are trying to make that happen which incluses sir fazle. MIT, south africa's free university movement, you if you agree that's the club you want to be in

cheers
chris

Subject: Re: how could we connect microeducation summit round taddy and his s.african partners

Hi Chris:
Your father’s early-60’s writing on Japan (1962, in a series of Articles in The Economist, then compiled into a book) influenced me strongly to spend a month in Japan in 1964 investigating Japan’s then “economic miracle”: the Government policies to double all Japanese family incomes inside 10 years (which they did).

I did not investigate, at that stage, the Japanese education education system, but I did investigate how Japan had become the world’s first country to adopt the Deming concepts of “continuous improvement and “Kaizen”. This later led, much later, me to investigate the first school (in Alaska) to apply Deming’s philosophy to education.  I did, however, visit Japan’s equivalent to the BBC: its NHK television system, and particularly its daily on-air parenting program (which impressed me greatly).  I was lucky enough to appear on one of their most popular programs called “My Secret”.

Later, you father’s (and your) wonderful “2024 Report” influenced me strongly as to what then turned out to be the incredible power of Moore’s Law (the doubling of computer-chip power every two years, compounded: at no increase in price), Metcalfe’s Law (the compounding power of global communications networks, especially the internet and World Wide Web) and what now I would describe as “Drucker’s Law”: that, to have any new technology replace an existing technology it needs to be at least ten times better . . . an achievement made possible by Moore’s Law, Metcalfe’s Law and perhaps “Macrae’s Law”:-)

Later, in 1970, I had the opportunity to tour the world, investigating television and educational television (then in its infancy) and (pertinent to this discussion) visiting the Soviet Union for the first time on the same mission – to then confirm your book’s incredible perception that the Soviet Union’s total system must inevitably collapse.  That world trip, and a follow-up one in 1972, was to investigate the future of electronic communications as part of the future of television, on behalf of a private-enterprise consortium bidding for the right to set up New Zealand’s second television network.  (We won, after a series of commissions of inquiry, but, almost immediately after the second inquiry, and before the decision came out in our favour, the Government changed and vetoed it).

In Japan, during those 1970 and 1972 television investigations, I visited Japan and concluded an interesting potential agreement with Toshiba for them to provide colour television equipment an a partnership that would have seen my plans for a second TV network in New Zealand become a global centre for training investigative journalists and as a satellite centre for educational TV (by then satellite broadcasting has begun).

“As  consolation prize”,, I then managed to win the “warrant” or licence to set up New Zealand’s first continuous audience-participation radio station, while dreaming of the day when your Dad’s (and by then, my) predictions would come true: that the entire world would change by millions of people takng control through world-wide electronic communications networks.

You, and your Japanese friends might be interested in the attached presentation made recently: “2020 Vision: 12 steps to the next society”.

This has been prepared as  a model for introducing new “learning methods” on both the Apple iPod-touch, iPhone and other smartphones – aimed first at China and India: where, of the incredible total of 6 billion mobile phones globally, China now has 1 billion and India almost that many.  Around 500 million Chinese also now have internet access and almost 70% of that is by mobile phone.

The two attachments might interest.  Feel free to share them with anyone.

Incidentally, the “2020 Vision” slides in their non-pdf version are the basis for my new concept of touch-screen “video-iBooks”:  the photo at the centre of each slide and it morphs into a video demonstration.  With the new Apple iBook2 “Author” software for the iPad, it is easy to prepare Powerpoint video-slides (such as the “2020 Vision”) and then trnsfer themk including videos, to the Apple iPad to use as the video illustratiouns for the iPad ibook:  See third pdf attachment.

Best wishes

Gordon Dryden
